Hey guys, give me an idea of the best winter bag to buy. I'm guessing it would stand to reason that the military down is going to be the best? I'm looking at some for 219 in freddie.

Well Kenny...it's like this...if you want light weight you have to go to MEC or Radical edge or order online. However, if weight is not an issue (not an issue for me) I highly recommend the Canadian issue sleeping bag. I couldn't tell you if that price is good or not (ask Rikki) as I got mine while in the army. If you get the inner and outer it will be good to -60! I never use both together, I use just the outer and if I want to add some warmth I will be adding a thick fleece bag liner.

back then the going price was 50" inner and 50" outer 7 "flannel liner 5" carring bag 7" hood now the gortex bivy bag on the other hand was more 50" i belive now all these parts are not needed !!! i recommend the military issue strongly ! but start out with the outer and a bag to carry and keep it dry i use only the one peice as well with a light blanket as moraguy said one peice does the trick and if not for you then you can add on to it then instead of going all out and maybe not needing too !!! but highly highly i recommend it try billy woods family outfitters

ok I know where your talking about. Thats where I got the price on the bags for the whole set but he wouldnt come down any. I think I will do like you guys suggested and just get the outer for now. I used one during that cold night during moose season while sleeping outside and was pretty toasty. Thanks

yeah it will save you some money yeah that gear is getting harder to get back then we got our stuff through crown assetts ! bidding on numberd lots of it but im not sure they even do that anymore he buys from other dealers as well so that drives the price up also keep an eye on kijiji or post an add looking for an item very good site if ya got a little time ! but sometimes things pop on there almost instantly

I love the GoreTex biviy bag! I honestly have woke up in the middle of the night sereral times laying in water when sleeping under the starts while I was in the military, I was bone dry all night! These bags work and work very very well. I have a few problems with them however, in very cold weather they tend to frost up on the inside because they don't breath enough. I have only noticed this when below -20. The second problem is that GoreTex melts so easy and so fast! If using a GoreTex biviy bag don't use a fire when winter camping unless you want holes in your nice new GoreTex bag! If your old school and like having a shelter and fire in the winter then check out the canvas bed rolls online...they are treated and are pretty waterproof and can handle those nice big bright sparks with ease!
Kenny! Rikki is 100% CORRECT! Start with the outer and a carry bag. As far as a liner goes you have two ways to go, the old army liner or go to CP Gear in Lincoln and get the nice thick fleece liner. Much warmer, dries faster and can be used without a sleeping bag in the summer and you will be very warm.

You could also get one at a military surplus, though it'll be used. You can get them dry cleaned afterwards, that usually does the trick.
