Les Stroud folding knife
First let me say this knife is worth the $19.99 you can get it for at Cdn Tire. I have seen it online for $29.99 plus shipping. I dont know if I would pay that much for it.
The first thing that caught my eye is the look of the knife. Among all the tactacool and camo knives out there it stands out with its green, grey and black color scheme. As some of you probably know the green is so if you set the knife down it makes it easy to see and the black rubber helps when it is wet to grip the knife.
The knife blade is stainless steel with a black coating and out of the package sharp. The black coating is to help keep the blade clean when cutting wood with lots of sap or other sticky, messy stuff. Gooey stuff wipes right off. But the coating scratches off easy. I have a few silver spots showing just from lightly using the knife. On the back of the blade is a notch for using the fire steel that is hidden in the back of the handle, but first you have to scrap off the black coating in the notch and off of the firesteel to get a good spark. Just dont do what I did and pushed down to hard using the firesteel .It broke. So now I have to drill out the firesteel handle and scrap out the remains as it is sealed in tight. I wish the steel wasnt pressed in so hard so it can be replaced in case of breakage. But as it was my own fault I cant say to much against the knife on this point. And the fire steel holder fights very secure in tha knife handle.
We will see how well the soft rubber wears long term.
The part of the blade that you don't see is rough looking but it locks up tight against the liner lock. It feels very secure with minimal side to side blade movement. But don't wrist flick the knife or the liner lock moves over to far and you may need a butter knife to pry it over enough to use your thumb.(ask me how I know ) The knurled thumb part of the locking bar is recessed back.
This is a very comfortable knife. Not to big or to small and with the rubber parts its a knife you will want to hold. But the knurled piece will make a "hot spot" on your finger if you use the knife for a long period of time.
The knife opens and closes smooth but mine makes a creak noise. I oiled it but that didnt help. Not to big a deal on a knife this
sturdy and comfortable. The bushings are plastic. The sides of the knife are all steel. Under the plastic scales it is well made (or seems to be so far).
The pant clip is nice, there is a coo lcut out of a fixed blade knife in it and combined with the rubber coating on the back of the knife it makes it very secure in pocket. You can notice the resistance when removing it so its not going to fall out easily like some of the slippery handled knives out there.
On the back of the knife is a lanyard hole. But it doesnt work. When the knife is shut the tip of the blade fills up enough of the hole that if you hook a lanyard up it pinches and starts to cut it. It is a small amount of the blade and probably easy enough to grind off with out affecting the looks or performance of the blade.
Thats all I can think to say about this right know. I will add to this as things pop into my head.
Conclusion: I like this knife. I like its different look. I like how sturdy the knife feels. I like how comfortable the knife feels. Plus for less then $20.00 its a great deal.
I would buy another if this one gets lost.
