Great point Rikki!
I will start a new board called "Topics for First Trip" I wasn't sure if anyone wanted to cover any topics on our first trip in Jan so I never posted anything. I think it is great if we get right to it.
Any compass made by Sunto or Silva is a damn fine compass! There is one issue that most people don't know or understand when it come to a good compass. North on a map is "true" north and the compass will point to magnetic north, there is a difference between the two. If you are planning to use your compass with a map to take bearings then you need a compass that has a small small samll...did I say small...lol...screw in the bezel (part that turns with the numbers around it) the screw can be on the top or the bottom. This screw allows you to adjust for the different between the two norths, called magnetic declination. If a compass with out this adjustment is used on a map it will still work but you will be off your target and depending on the distance you are covering you cound be 20 meters to 1km off course...a really easy way to get lost! We can cover this on our first meeting. Let me know if you guy would like me to post a video of a compass with the adjustment.

Great Rikki! A basic compass lesson will take about 15 mins and then mabe 30 mins for everyone to give it a try. I am talking the bare bones basic lesson of how to not get lost in the woods.
